Life on Mars was never as visually stimulating as some of the paintings I have been doing lately.
The months spent there prepared me for these new works, often waiting at the station for delivery of
the goods we needed to carry on the observations. We were on the time-clock, so hardly anything
was ever wasted.
A passer-bye noted from a piece of paper tacked on the studio wall, that the experimental colorful
manipulated journeys of paint on paper were actually started on the the first day of 2009 in a small
studio in Mexico. Photos were taken, but later confiscated by the local authorities.
One could suggest that painting along the lower half of the Pacific Ocean might creep into the pieces,
where using water mediums was as casual as a drink at the local watering hole. One may be right.
Paintings like whirlwinds of images, twirling the eye to remote, almost alien visions are often a curious
direction for me. Since I left Mars, they seem to make more sense now. I left town, knowing what I left
behind would not be lost. The notes I took were safe.
With mixtures of inks, paint and specially formulated liquids, these new works are overflowing in psychedelic
reasonings, psychedelic twists and turns of events concrete in imagination.
There are certain pieces one comes across, confronted like a mid-day hold-up that can be described as
an actual visual seizure of paint. 'Rather Tomorrow" is one of a group, laid out in the last town square
I visited. The very feel of the paint, spread out like a lost plain or valley in some remote land takes you
into the images of piano players and birds in nests resting from their first flight.

Undaunted by all that came before, I attempt to paint in the privacy of out in the open, among thousands of
faces staring, hunting for the truth I was told existed in paint by the very souls that came before me. Their
memories linger, their creations splattered among the portals of hundreds of check-points and border
crossings, marking the paths they walked with color and black lines drawn in rock.
'Shades on White' shows these travels among the surf lanes of texture and pigment. Nothing lost, nothing
gained but the last wave of the day.
